Baby News… and Our Gender Reveal!

natalie-malan-pregnancy-its-a-girl-free-printable-web natalie-malan-pregnancy-its-a-girl-free-printable-closeup-2  nataliemalan_freshly_picked_white_mocs_moccasins_2

nataliemalan_gender_reveal_giant_balloon_zurchersWay back in January when I started the new blog and website, I thought maybe something in my office was making me sick.  I was wrapping up a bunch of freelance projects and spending long days in the studio.  All I could eat was ruffles and sour cream and onion dip and “chicago mix” popcorn from Costco – which should have been my first clue right there.  It was mid January, and I remember I kept complaining to my friend Jaime about how I was sure I had some weird virus until she finally convinced me to take a pregnancy test and it immediately came back positive!

The kids were convinced right away that it’s a girl and I only took my daughter to my gender ultrasound with me because I was concerned that chaos would break loose if we were having a boy…. So in the video below my husband and two little boys are finding out what we’re having.  Along with our sweet little friend Scarlett who happened to be over when everyone was finally awake from naps and happy enough to get to pop the balloon!  If I was doing this again, I’d definitely cut up some small pieces of tissue paper or something a little bit more “floaty?” to put inside the balloon….

The pic above is of the very first gift I received for baby girl which was a beautiful pair of Freshly Picked Mocs from my friend Oakley.  First gifts for my littles have always held a special place in my heart because for some reason it always makes pregnancy seem so much more real to me.

16 weeks pregnant in the video below, and 32 weeks pregnant in the photos in the pink shirt.  The days are FLYING by this time around! Click on the link below for the free 5×7 It’s a Girl watercolor and modern calligraphy printable!

Free Printable Succulent Painting

5 / 13 / 155 / 13 / 15

nataliemalan-free-printable-succulent-flowers-webBecause at my house we believed in first winners, and second winners…… Here’s a fun 5×7 free printable download for everyone who entered my Instagram custom portrait giveaway!  Be sure to download it now before it disappears and travels to my etsy print store!  NO guarantees how long this will be up.

Is anyone else into succulent houseplants these days?  I’ve been seeing lots of cute things on Apartment Therapy, and if you know me I’m definitely traditional when it comes to style.  But somehow the clean modernist style is creeping in….. and houseplants definitely seem to be part of the equation.  I finally found a fiddle leaf fig last week and can’t wait to see how it does.  It’s taller than I am!

I spent the last two weeks prepping and planting my garden so hopefully soon I’ll have more fresh flowers to paint for inspiration.  But until then a little print will have to do.

Click Here to Download the Succulent Printable

As always, personal use only, and all images Natalie Malan©

I would love to see how you style your print! Tag me on Instagram #nataliemalanstyle

If you choose to print at home, my preferred paper is a watercolor paper cut to fit your printer, or a cardstock.  They should both give lovely results.  I like something with a little texture so it looks more like an original gouache painting.

If you choose to print at somewhere like Costco or Sams Club, I ALWAYS turn off the Auto color correct!  In my Costco account it’s saved in “My Settings.”  I also like to pick lustre.  Hope you enjoy the free printable!

Mother’s Day Free Printable

5 / 10 / 155 / 12 / 15

nataliemalan-mothersday-freeprintable-cardMy kids have been so excited about their Mother’s Day presents that they made me open them the second they brought them home from school.  I’m now the proud owner of a golden heart fingerprint salt clay necklace and a fingerprint flower bookmark.  And I’m always truly touched by the handmade and heartfelt gifts they have given me.

My husband took my dickblick wish list to heart and went all out.  I can’t wait to try try these new paints out!

If you’re looking for a last minute printable here’s one I made this morning.  Yay for insomnia, am I right????  It took me longer to figure out how to post it as a download than it did to calligraphy and paint it.  As always personal use only, Natalie Malan©

Portfolio Update

4 / 11 / 154 / 11 / 15

nataliemalan_freshlemonade_paisley_boyA bright and lively pattern for Petite Lemon for Shutterfly.  Ever since we had our first son, I find it so fun and refreshing to design things for boys!  I love it.  There will be more monsters and robots in my future and I can’t wait.  Design for boys is definitely an area that’s lacking.

Free Valentine Printable – You are my Favorite Thing

1 / 19 / 151 / 24 / 15

nataliemalan__free_printable_favoritethings_valentine_coral_mantle_web2My good friend Anne Marie was kind enough to host several “Favorite Things” parties and asked me to create this printable to hand out.  We each brought 5 of our favorite thing, and then drew 5 names when we arrived at her house to see who we would be giving our five items to.

The printable was her inspired way to make it about people and not just “things.”  Gotta love that girl; she’s got class.

Then we went around the room, and stood, and told everyone what our favorite thing was, why it was our favorite, and called out the names of the “winners” of our item.  It was just like Oprah with fab food, and women screaming for fun prizes!  So fun!

nataliemalan_alana_mantle_valentine_free_printable_webThis morning my other friend Alana was styling her gorgeous mantle for Valentine’s day and sent me a pic so I could see how cute it all looks with the printable!  It was completely her suggestion to offer it here as a free download, so you can be sure to thank Alana later…..

Click here to see how to make a cute string heart like the one Alana made.  I’m not sure if this is the actual tutorial she used, but it looks pretty similar.

I hope you enjoy the Free Valentine Printable!  Feel free to download and print as gifts to your loved ones and friends; I only ask that you keep my subtle signature on the bottom.

Click on the color image you’d like below; click again to see it at the maximum image size 5×7, and right click to download it to your computer. It should print best as a 5×7.

Drawing with Kids

1 / 5 / 157 / 19 / 15

nataliemalan_studio_child_friendly_webSo I decided to make good on my last post about spending more creative time with my munchkins.  And I realized that having a stool by my chair at my drawing table would probably be a good way to keep this little man from drinking his paint and eating his crayons (well one out of two isn’t bad…).  It worked out well this morning and I’m thinking I may even invest in a few ikea stools with backs like these so I don’t have to worry about him wiggling off.

nataliemalan_studio_child_friendly4_web

This is his usual face when I’m wrangling him around my studio.  He got a lot happier when he was sitting by me and we were both coloring.  We encourage the time saving “two handed coloring” method.  Deadlines people!  Always deadlines.  Might as well train them young.

Anyone have any tips for drawing with littles?

Happy New Year!

1 / 2 / 154 / 12 / 15

nataliemalan_paint_makers_gonna_make_freebie nataliemalan_paint_makers_gonna_make_freebie5A day late.  Because that’s how we roll here on Christmas vacation.  I’ve been cleaning out my office and throwing away junk all over my house like a mad woman.  My poor kids.  I did decide to keep all of them so they should be grateful….. Still debating on the littlest though.  He decided to start 2015 off right by showing us his crib jail breaking skills.  Oh well……

Organizing my gouache and watercolor palettes have been on my to do list for a long time.  I wanted one with all my colors in it so I picked up this wonderful metal watercolor tin thing on Amazon, and put all my colors into pans.  It’s been so great to have them all in one place!  And now I actually know what colors I own!

I haven’t made any actual resolutions yet; other than to clean out all the extra things around the house.  That seems to be a never ending job.  I would definitely like to spend more quality time with my kiddos in the studio, so I think that will be on the books for sure.  Done.  Resolution made.  Here’s to 2015!

Your Story Video Goodness

12 / 20 / 141 / 7 / 15

I was looking into doing some gold foiling and came across this gem when I was considering if my Your Story machine would work as the type of laminator required.  Has anyone ever tried foiling with a Your Story?

I made this video when I was about 7 or 8 months pregnant with my first child; who’s now in kindergarten.  My how time flies!
